Coronado’s Search for GOLD 2. He came to a Zuni pueblo and saw that the walls were not gold. 3. Coronado then sent search parties to different directions. 1. In 1540 the viceroy sent Coronado to find the Golden Cities. 4. The groups found the Grand Canyon, the Gulf of Mexico, California, and pueblo villages in what is now New Mexico. 5. Coronado’s group looked for a mythical city of riches but found no gold. 6. They went back to Mexico and reported that there was no gold.

Some Native Americans who lived at the mission married and built homes near the missions. Pueblos grew there. Because missions were the center of activity, people were close to many buildings. Missions had farms and ranches, good water supply, and mills. Why did pueblos grow up around the missions?
