In 1540 the viceroy sent Coronado to find the Golden Cities. 4. The groups found the Grand Canyon, the Gulf of Mexico, California, and pueblo villages in what is now New Mexico. 5. Coronado’s group looked for a mythical city of riches but found no gold. 6. They went back to Mexico and reported that there was no gold.
