Types of Housing Definitions Multifamily house- is a structure that provides housing for more than one household. Penthouse- suites located at the top of apartment buildings. Garden home- one-story units with landscaped grounds. Efficiency-one main room, a small kitchen area, and a bathroom.

Types of Housing Definitions con’t. Single family- Designed to house one family. Custom Built- Condominium- A type of ownership where the buyer owns individual living space and also has an undivided interest in the common areas and facilities of the multi-unit project. Cooperative- A type of ownership in which people buy shares of stock in a nonprofit housing corporation. “Buy” apartment by purchasing shares in the corporation. More shares = a bigger apartment. Townhome- One of a row of houses connected with common side walls.

Condominium A type of ownership where the buyer owns individual living space and also has an undivided interest in the common areas and facilities of the multiunit project.

Townhouse One of a row of houses connected with common side walls.

Attached House Designed for one household but share a common wall with the houses on each side. Example. Townhouses and row houses.

Freestanding Houses stand alone, not connected to another unit.

Freestanding Custom built- by an architect and a contractor. Dream House. Expensive and take a long time to plan and build.

Freestanding Owner-built- People with lots of spare time, energy, and building skills.

Freestanding Factory-built- constructed in a plant and moved to a site.

Freestanding Factory-built –Modular- factory-built in a coordinated series of modules. Wall, floor, ceiling, and roof panels combined in boxes.

Freestanding Manufactured/mobile- completely built in a factory.

Freestanding Site-built- built on a lot, piece by piece on a foundation.
