JP Nuclear Materials The Joint Programme for Nuclear Materials of the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA JPNM) Achievements and perspectives Lorenzo Malerba SCKCEN JPNM Coordinator Workshop with Member States’ Stakeholders, Brussels, 10 Sept. 2014 Coordinated by CEA (A. Michaux)

JP Nuclear Materials www.eera-jpnm.eu The JPNM role in the complex landscape of energy initiatives ) TA4 integrity assessment SET-plan (low carbon energy) SNETP (sustainable nuclear energy) NUGENIA ESNII GenIV GenII/III EERA (ren. energy) Industrial initatives European Industrial Initiatives JP1 JP energy x TA6 innov. LWR JPNM Ongoing dialogue to create link (harmonisation of workplan) TFEU – Non-nuclear Euratom - Nuclear Public Research Org. NC2I HT Provides research support on materials for SNE Common materials issues (IR) JPs TRL < 5 EERA = research!

JP Nuclear Materials www.eera-jpnm.eu At least three reasons to have Nuclear Materials in EERA As low as wind Nuclear energy produces negligible amounts of CO 2 E=mc 2 (1 g U = 2 toe) Nuclear energy exists and produces ~ 28% baseload electricity in Europe Materials are key for nuclear safety and cross-cutting through other energy technologies No accident if material doesn’t fail

JP Nuclear Materials www.eera-jpnm.eu JPNM genesis: born to support sustainable nuclear energy EERA JP Nuclear Materials EERA JP Nuclear Materials SRA of SNETP FP7/ GETMAT Support to ESNII National programs FP7/ MATTER EC project 2008-2013 November 2010: 1st JPNM launched (2011-2015) EC coll. project 2011-2014 EC integrated research project 2013-2017 FP7/ MatISSE Natural evolution of long- standing collaboration on materials for sustainable nuclear energy (GenIV) to achieve decarbonisation, higher nuclear safety levels, efficiency, security of supply and minimization of nuclear waste (fast reactors, close fuel cycle, partitioning and transmutation, …) Capitalisation of projects Towards integrated research on nuclear materials in Europe

JP Nuclear Materials www.eera-jpnm.eu SCWR (V)HTR SFR LFR GFR Gen. II & III - vessel Gen. II & III - core (measure of exposure to irradiation) Fusion GenIV materials needs exceed those for GenII/III & overlap with fusion The spectrum of JPNM activities is necessarily very wide

JP Nuclear Materials www.eera-jpnm.eu Objectives of the JPNM: in line with H2020 challenges, focused on NM Development of innovative materials for industrial use with superior capabilities: -More resistant to high temperature and aggressive environments JPNM  improve safety & sustainability of Nuclear Energy as low-C source, focusing on materials aspects Better knowledge of materials behaviour in operation: -Predictive capability (prolonged irradiation & high temperature effects, compatibility with coolants …) -Select qualified most suited materials -Define safe design rules

JP Nuclear Materials www.eera-jpnm.eu A subprogramme structure to cover all aspects of NM Fuel Structural materials Technological Innovation Industrial application Basic & Applied Research SP1: support to European Sustainable Nuclear Industrial Initiative (ESNII) (K.-F. Nilsson, JRC-IET) SP2: Innovative steels (M. Serrano, CIEMAT) SP3: Ceramic materials (F. Maday, ENEA) SP5: Advanced fuels (J. Somers, JRC-ITU) SP6: Physical modelling of fuel behaviour (M. Bertolus, CEA) SP4: Physical modelling of structural materials (C. Pareige, CNRS) Coordinator: L. Malerba, SCKCEN Deputy coordinator: A. Bohnstedt, KIT TRL

JP Nuclear Materials www.eera-jpnm.eu An established management structure Full Participants (> 5PY/Y) WP1 Task 1.1.1 … Task 1.1.x WPn Task 1.n.1 … Task 1.n.z … Steering Committee Management Board Appoint reps Reports/Proposes  Chairs  Endorses/Rejects (Appoints/Sacks) Associates (e.g. universities or industries) JP Coordinator (& deputy) SP Coordinators Reports Appoint/ Report Contact persons (JTT)  Chair Report/Propose  Define Update & Monitor

JP Nuclear Materials www.eera-jpnm.eu Flexible instruments of implementation Pilot Projects (PP) Task Forces (TF) Joint Technical Teams (JTT) Small projects (~2 M€) focused on precise topics (included in DoW) that result from convergence of plans of a few labs from different MS. Typical duration: 3-4 years. Groups of experts appointed to provide specific answer to a question, delivering a report. In charge for ~1 year. Scientific communities involved in each SP that meet regularly in targeted workshops or other meetings to monitor and share results and discuss collaboration

JP Nuclear Materials www.eera-jpnm.eu Ongoing effort to better share and disseminate information The website is a newborn but already very effective Will contain documents aimed at a wide public Tool to create reports online

JP Nuclear Materials www.eera-jpnm.eu Towards higher levels of integration in MatISSE JPNM Training & Mobility Scheme Preserve & boost skills & knowledge, share facilities Vision paper & roadmap Match bottom-up & top-down approaches Stakeholders groups -Member states -Other platforms -Industries Scientific Advisory Committee -Overall monitoring -PP evaluation …but further integration and making the research programme a reality in H2020 require FUNDS !

JP Nuclear Materials www.eera-jpnm.eu An EJP on NM is a suitable tool to achieve further integration JPNM starts from good level of integration National programmes alignment JPNM is a small & focused platform Capitalization of EU project results Short and long term vision & plan Boosted with relatively little effort Seed for full integration of NM research in EU … but covers most NM aspects, from basic research to link with industry Transparent way to monitor research on NM in Europe Objectives consistent with H2020 Additional benefit

JP Nuclear Materials www.eera-jpnm.eu Summary The JPNM was created to support sustainable nuclear energy (GenIV), as a means to achieve energy decarbonisation, with higher safety levels, efficiency, security of supply and minimization of nuclear waste Materials are key to guarantee safety of nuclear reactors of all generations and allow efficient & safe design of future nuclear systems New materials with superior properties are also useful for other energy technologies and bring innovation at industrial level Over the last five years the JPNM has reached a good level of integration in terms of convergence of national programmes, capitalizing on the results of different European projects and initiatives and providing a promising framework for exchanging experience, sharing facilities, mobility of researchers and training of young scientists (level 2, moving to level 3, in the EERA scale)

JP Nuclear Materials www.eera-jpnm.eu Conclusion An adequately funded EJP on nuclear materials could be the flexible and appropriate tool in order to boost the level of integration reached within the JPNM and provide the basis to extend its portfolio beyond its current spectrum of activities

JP Nuclear Materials Thank you for your attention Any question?

JP Nuclear Materials www.eera-jpnm.eu TRL time 5- SP1: qualification, codification (current materials) SP2, SP3, SP5: advanced materials Industrial Initiative SP4, SP6: fundamental research, modelling Short and long term vision
