Formation of Pennsylvania. Founded in British America on March 4, 1681 Founded By William Penn Dictated in a royal charter by King Charles II William Penn.

Methods of populating. Population at The Time of about 1790 was about 600- 750,000 people. Religious Freedom The society of friends- safe place for friends to live in and practice their faith.

Structure of Society Capital: Philadelphia Government established in 1682 Appointed Governor 72 Member Provincial council General Assembly- Largest & most representative branch of Government but had little power.

Environmental Factors Pennsylvania named after William Penn’s father and from the Latin word sylvania, meaning “Forest land” Heavily Forested Very Cold Winters Mild Summers

Agriculture Wheat and Corn leading crops Rye, hemp, and flax also major crops. Livestock was another major money maker. Tobacco Farm home in Eastern Pennsylvania.

Industry Arts and Crafts and Home manufactures, grew rapid. Sawmills and gristmills first appeared among various streams, ran by hydroelectricity. Gun and papermaking industries were major Factories using hydroelectricity.

Important People. William Penn- Founder of the Colony of Pennsylvania. Benjamin Franklin- Founded The Academy and College of Philadelphia, and The University of Pennsylvania. Thomas Paine- wrote Common Sense, and first to publicly champion the phrase “The United states of America”.

Important People. Arthur St. Clair- served as a President under the Articles of Confederation.
