Standard ELACC8L2: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. a. Use punctuation (comma)

A simple sentence is made from 1 independent clause 1 Ind. Cl. + 0 Dep. Cl. =Simple Examples: Ex. The birds in the tree sang happily. Ex. Several squirrels played chase on the telephone line.

Use Punctuation… 6. When you need to separate adjectives that are describing the same word* Ex. A clumsy, lumbering polar bear crossed the tundra. BUT NOT when they modify each other. Ex. I have on a bright green shirt.

Use Punctuation… 7. When you want to show contradiction Ex. A dolphin is actually a mammal, not a fish.

Use Punctuation… 8. To set off an interjection. Ex. Hey, have you seen my tea glass? Ex. Wow! Look at that sunset!

Use Punctuation… 9. When you are using a direct address Ex. Let’s go shopping, Sally. Ex. Gage, will you hand me that book?

Use Punctuation 10. To set off a modifier (participle or adjective phrase, etc.) that interrupts or follows the main sentence. Ex. Mike, tiptoeing quietly, sneaked out the front door. Ex. The runner, suffering from exhaustion, fell. Ex. The boys put out the fire, careful not to leave any embers burning.

Samples: Why does each sentence use commas? 1.James, my neighbor, has a really loud dog. 2. Today’s lunch choices are: pizza, hot wings, or salad. 3. Lucy, have you seen my iPhone? 4. Um, I don’t know the answer. 5. The square root of 16 is 4, not 8. 6. Suddenly, the children heard a loud noise. 7. The president approached the podium. Then, he began his speech.

Choices The sentence uses commas to: Separate a list of single words Separate a list of multiword elements Separate adjectives Set off an appositive Set off a direct address Set of an introductory element Set of a transition Set of a modifier that interrupts or follows Set off an interjection Show contradiction
