1
English term: Pidgins Neomi Thijs
2
Denotation: a grammatically simplified form of a language, typically English, Dutch, or Portuguese, some elements of which are taken from local languages, used for communication between people not sharing a common language.
3
Connotation: In some cases people would describe pidgin in a rather derogative manner by saying it’s a broken language. A more positive connotation is that pidgin is a reflection of rich cultural heritage of a language that has emerged from a mix of communities of different origins.
4
It is most commonly employed in situations such as trade. “I wish I could speak pidgin with my friends”
5
Pidgins are most commonly spoken in countries where English is not the native language but where the local culture has been influenced by a foreign language. Example: Hawaii and papa new guinea http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkdm2Yw8 obM&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkdm2Yw8 obM&feature=related
