Random thoughts… You and your table partner are going to be given a random thought or question. It your job together to come up with a theory as to WHY it is the way that it is and have additional information to support your backing.

What is a theory?? Many things to many people… – An orderly, intergrates set of statements that describes, explains, and predicts behavior – An attempt of specify as clearly as possible, a set of ideas that pertain to a particular phenomenon – Broad frameworks which shape our view of ther world. – Theories explain the whats, why, and hows

Which theory is right?? Although some students want to know the “right answers,” in reality, we all know that when it comes to theories, there are no completely right theories.

What about in Child Development? Have you ever wondered why it is common for teenagers to be asking the questions “who am I?” Or… Why toddlers throw temper tantrums Or… Some children grow up and turn out to be similar to their parents? – Having same habits, behavior, occupation etc?

Child Development Cont. A study compiled of a variety of theories. Focuses on many aspects of human development including: – Physical – Cognitive – Social – Emotional – Moral

Physical Development Includes muscle coordination and control, growth in size and in proportion. Examples: a child rolling over, lifting its head, or sitting up.

Cognitive Development The ability of the brain or mind to take in and process information. Examples: a child recognizing their name, or recognizing a parent, recognizing that when they shake a rattle it will make a noise.

Social/ Behavior Development A child learning and discovering the expectations and rules for interacting with others. Examples: a child smiling at mother, a child learning to share a toy with a friend.

Emotional Development The ability to recognize and understand feelings and how to respond to them appropriately. Example: a child feeling jealousy due to a new baby in the family, a child feeling love for another person, a child being afraid of the dark.

Moral Development Identifying personal values. Examples: right or wrong, behaving according to what others need or want, respecting human rights, developing principles to guide behavior.
