3 Objective: l In a small team, I will teach a 7 th grader about species relationship vocabulary by writing and acting out a creative drama.

5 Species Relationships How species get along

7 For any two different critters, they l Get along well - good buddies! l Don’t really care - apathetic l Go at it - enemies l There are other possibilities

8 1) Predation l The big, bad PREADATOR l They get to eat the PREY l Usually the prey is not too happy. l When one animal consumes and receives its energy from another living animal.

9 2) Parasitism l A relationship that is bad for one organism and good for another. l Is it different than PREDATION? l Yes! The other critter is not killed

10 1 billion people plus on the planet have round worms in the intestines

11 3) Mutualism l A relationship between species that is beneficial for both. l Birds cleaning out the teeth of alligators l Alligator gets a free flossing l Bird gets a meal

12 What does the bee get? What does the flower get? What do these two critters get out of the relationship?

13 4) Commensalism l A relationship between species that is helpful for one. l The other species is neither helped nor harmed.

14 Another example l See the shrimp on top? l Who benefits - the shrimp or the slug? l How? l Is the other one hurt?

15 Another example l The tiger kills the prey. l He/she eats. l The vulture gets to clean up afterward. l Does not affect the lion one way or the other.

16 Another Factor: Competition l Organisms competing for a LIMITED RESOURCE l Like food l water l space

18 The activity l You will be assigned a small group. l With your group, write and perform a play demonstrating your knowledge of the relationship words.

24 Alternate Activity l Working alone, compose a 1000 plus word essay that is creative and clearly demonstrates knowledge of our vocabulary. l Include a few pictures. l Highlight the concepts somehow in this creative story.
