2 Definition Liberalism: the political point of view that is opposed to any ideas threatening an individual and reaching the full potential of a human. This system follows ideals that promote freedom of individual members of society. Form of Economy: Free-Market Capitalist ideas, promote individualism John Locke

3 Important Vocabulary -Classical Liberalism: political philosophy protecting the rights of individuals and prevention of power-hungry states; it controls military forces, business ownership, and constitutions protection of individual rights. -Social Liberalism: political philosophy in agreement with standard ideas of individual freedoms but supporting fair distribution of wealth and power -Liberal Democracy: government democracy based off individual rights and freedoms and decisions from a representative democracy Representative Democracies

5 Liberalism Found Today in Political Parties 1.United States a.Libertarian Party (leader=David Nolan), started in 1971 b.focus on rights of the individual, 3rd largest party in the US c.successful: running in elections with free-market economy 2.Canada a.Libertarian Party (leader=Justin Trudeau since 2008) b.focus on economy, employment, retirement, & environment c.successful: helping middle class families with mixed economy 3.United Kingdom a.Liberal Democratic Party (based off the Whig Party, 1918) b.focus on environment, social/cultural equality, money & power c.successful: supported because of equality ideas with market economy D. 7 Discussion Questions: Liberalism in Governments -United States --leaders selected with vote, titles: president, secretary, etc. --consent of the governed: have legitimacy due to voting from the people --power change due to terms ending --rule of law: laws restrict power of people in government positions -Canada --leaders selected from bloodline (sovereign: Queen), democratic vote (rest of parliament: Prime Minister) --consent of the governed: not always for constitutional monarch, but for other parliament (voted in) --rule of law: constitution limits amount of monarch’s power -United Kingdom --leaders selected by voting of the leading political party, they elect leader who becomes Prime Minister --consent of the governed: indirect, citizens can vote for political party but not directly for leader --rule of law: there is a constitution that sets standard for distribution of power Queen Elizabeth II

8 Pros & Cons of Government Pros: -gives individuals right of expression -guarantee of certain freedoms -capacity to respect the minority parties -promote changes and looking forward to future Cons: -so many freedoms, have freedoms taken advantage of -individuality not always supported by groups Pros of Liberalism

9 Analysis of Government This form of government is very effective because individuals are able to do as they please. Because this form of government is focused on the individual, people involved in the government have their needs met in their preferred ways.
