Who is James Chadwick? Born: October 20, 1891
Bollington, England Death: July 24, 1974 (Age 82) Cambridge, England Spouse: Aileen Stewart- Brown Daughter: Joanna Stewart Chadwick Batterham Daughter: Judith Chadwick
3
Who is James Chadwick? Most significant work done: Colleagues: Rivals:
Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge Colleagues: Ernest Rutherford E.S Bieler Rivals: None - Rutherford
4
Achievements Graduated from Honours School of Physics
Manhattan Project Development of atomic bombs 1932: Made fundemental discovery! Existence of the NEUTRON!!!! (particle in an atom without electrical charge) Added nitrogen to alpha particles with emission of a proton First artificial nuclear transformation
5
Manhattan Project Atomic disentegration does NOT need to overcome an electric barrier. Can penetrate and split heaviest elements Fission of Uranium- 235 created atom bomb
6
Discovery of the Neutron
Chadwick’s set-up an experiment discovering neutrons -alpha particles are projected towards a beryllium target -the emitted particles fell on an object called paraffin wax -once it fell on the paraffin wax, it released another type of particles -that other type of particles were protons -what went through the beryllium target were uncharged and had a similar mass to protons…called NEUTRONS
