2 Our FIPSE Programs Systems Approach to Gerontology Education (SAGE) 2007-2010 Skills for Healthy Aging Resources & Programs (SHARP) 2010-2013

3 Challenge #1 Identifying “need” across college systems and across disciplines (gerontology, nursing & social welfare)

4 Our Approach Used discipline-specific competencies Faculty assessed how well competencies were being met in their programs using “competency mapping tool” Identified opportunities for faculty development to address gaps

5 Maximizing faculty adoption and use of new content in their own teaching programs Challenge #2

6 Developed curricula tool kits to provide flexibility in how they could be used Set expectations for faculty Built Action Planning into faculty development programs Provided follow-on TA/coaching Our Approach

7 Action Plan development: 32 small, 49 medium and 15 large Trained a total of 123 faculty (goal was 60) These faculty reached 4,433 other trainees (faculty and students) by 2010 www.geronet.ucla.edu/sage SAGE Outcomes

8 How can we most effectively help college faculty to teach courses designed by project faculty? Challenge #3

9 Developed comprehensive tool kits and resources for course materials Hosted course specific break out sessions during faculty development programs Set up coaching/mentoring project faculty + teaching faculty course teams Project faculty served a TA/coaching role through call meetings prior to and during the course Our Approach

10 Courses developed and approved at both colleges Offered faculty development program to 18 College of the Canyons (COC) faculty Courses being piloted at COC Fall, 2011 Faculty development program planned for Feb, 2012 at Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) Courses will continue at COC and be offered at SBCC starting Fall, 2012 Status of SHARP
