Unit 1 Introduction to

What is Earth Science? With a partner come up with a definition of Earth Science:

Earth Science is The study of the earth’s land, water and air. Earth Science also includes the study of outer space and the objects in it.

Fields of Earth Science FIELDWhat is Studied GeologyThe Earth’s land, including the surface of the Earth and the inside of the Earth; how the Earth changes; history of the Earth OceanographyThe Earth’s oceans MeteorologyThe Earth’s Air and weather AstronomyOuter space, including the planets, stars and other objects in space and how they interact with the Earth

Project 1 With a partner you are going to work on a Earth Science Word Sort DIRECTION: Get materials Fold the paper so that you have three (3) sections. Label them: – Astronomy meteorology geology Place the words on the poster board or boards that you think is the correct category When everyone has finished we will share out and then place on walls At the end of the year we will revisit these to see what we have learned. Be creative : add pictures and color to your work This is your First GRADE

Why is Earth Science important:

Some Basic Definitions: Observation: Using your senses What are you 5 senses sight taste touch smell hearing Inferences: are conclusions based on observations Classification: is grouping on the basis of common properties why do we classify?

More Definitions Mass - the amount of matter in an object. It is measured in grams It is measure with a triple beam balance of a electronic balance Volume - the amount of space that an object occupies. It is measured in ml or cm 3 - it is measured with a formula length *width * height - Or a graduated cylinder

So what is Density then Density is: the concentration of matter in an object Huh? What does that mean? how much stuff makes up the object Which is more dense

Now let’s learn some density rules (Now doesn’t that sound like fun)  As the temperature of a substance increase the density will decrease example: hot air rises  As the temperature of a substance decrease, the density of the object with increase

Float or Sink  Less dense objects: Float  More dense objects: Sink (http://youtu.be/9K3MM2xuc3U)http://youtu.be/9K3MM2xuc3U  If an object and the fluid are the same density, the object will float in the middle of the liquid.  The lower the density of and object the higher it will float. ……………. And now for the fun stuff

Activity 1 Now we are going to see what happens: Directions: 1. find a (1) person to work with. 2. get materials from teacher 3. Make the following table in your notebook 4. Fill in the first two columns of your chart 5. Now drop the objects in the water one at a time and see what happens. 6. Record data in the last column. 7. Finally, in your notebook place the objects in order from least to most dense Now lets come back together and share our findings Does is Sink or does it float? ObjectPrediction Sink or float Actual Sink or float

So how do we find the density of an object
