3. Public Education New England colonies had the first education.  Literacy was important because of the Bible.  Massachusetts passed laws requiring public schools (boys only) Middle and southern colonies saw public education come about at a later time.

4. Christianity New England colonies (Puritan) Middle colonies (many different groups) Southern colonies (Anglican church) First Great Awakening- religious movement in the colonies to bring them back to God.  Ideas of Religious freedom and separation of church and state soon followed.
