Public Education New England colonies had the first education. Literacy was important because of the Bible. Massachusetts passed laws requiring public schools (boys only) Middle and southern colonies saw public education come about at a later time.

Christianity New England colonies (Puritan) Middle colonies (many different groups) Southern colonies (Anglican church) First Great Awakening- religious movement in the colonies to bring them back to God. Ideas of Religious freedom and separation of church and state soon followed.

Egalitarianism All men are created equal and possess natural rights. Consent of the governed- gov’t is responsible to its people. Nationalism- pride in one’s nation.

Limited Equality Suffrage- the right to vote: only white males who owned land could vote. slavery
