For the purposes of this lab, you will be changing your laptop screen into a microscope. This is not a virtual lab, you will actually be manipulating a microscope in a lab in British Columbia. You will be working in groups of 3 – 4. This is 5% of your grade.
3
Print out: RWSL – Introduction to Microscopy; Summer 2014. This is found on the homepage under the green button “Remote Web Based Lab.” It is the third item down on the page.
4
Read the complete laboratory procedure before attending the lab session. Complete the following pre-lab exercises: ◦ Pre-Lab 1: The Microscope ◦ Pre-Lab 2: Field of View and Depth of Field of a Compound Microscope ◦ Pre-Lab 3: Observation of Cells Take the Pre-Lab Quiz in your RWSL assignments file.
5
You will need to review how to use the microscope. Read Appendix A – F, pages 14 – 21. It is imperative that you read this material PRIOR to participating in the lab.
7
It is quite easy to access the lab. ◦ You must be using Internet Explorer and a PC ◦ You will be given a URL, which will take you to the lab. ◦ You will be given a log in name and password that will be emailed to you. ◦ Once you are in the session, you MUST dial the phone number on the screen so that you can talk to your fellow students and teaching assistant.
8
During this 90 minute – 2 hour lab you will be collecting data and taking pictures of specimens. You will complete all of the “Data Collection” during the lab. You will complete the “Analysis” section after the lab.
9
You will be submitting the analysis question to me. Submit them through the assignments file at the bottom of the RWSL file. You may answer the Summary Questions, but do not need to turn those in.
10
If you are submitting as a group, please put all names on the title page. ◦ Title Page with participants, Course, and date ◦ Subheadings for Exercises 1 – 3 with clear and concise answers to the questions. State the question and provide the answer. ◦ Appendix A: using your “captured” image follow the instructions for the leaf cell and Frog Skin Cell.
11
As this is a grant project, fill out the survey for Rutger’s University, then send me a confirming email and you will receive 5 extra points on your overall score.
