Journaling What do I want you to write? Do not summarize the text! Reflect on what YOU feel about the text. Focus on the subtext: what is the author hinting at but not flat-out saying? Elements to comment on: setting, characters, plot (Freytag’s), style (point-of-view, tone, mood, sound devices, figurative language, symbols, theme), and how all affect the story. About how much do I want you to write? ½ page for a book chapter ( Journals must be written in complete sentences. )

Notebook Your three-ring binder needs 5 sections: – Bellwork/Classwork – Notes – Journal – EOC Materials – Returned Papers (Tests, Essays, Projects, etc.)

In small-groups, closely read the article “No, You’re Not Entitled to Your Opinion” Analyze the argument presented and decide if it’s logically explained and justified. Why or why not? What role do facts and opinions play in this article? Hold this author to his own expectations. Is he entitled to his opinion? Why or why not?

Now, as we watch the following video take note of how the speaker(s) present their arguments. Identify their strengths and weaknesses. What do they do that makes them effective speakers? Ineffective speakers?

A fact is a statement that can be proven through evidence. Some facts never change. But some facts can change. A fact that doesn’t change: Tennessee is a state. A fact that can change: This food is fresh.

An opinion is a statement that tells what someone thinks. Opinions can also change.
