4 With the contribution of the Civil Protection Financial Instrument of the European Union Preparedness for evacuation in case of a nuclear accident Project background (1) Nuclear accident is low probability – high impact event Municipalities Krško and Cernavoda both host nuclear power plants Municipality Krško is at cross-road of vital infrastructure for the SEE, i.e. Motorway A1, X. Pan-European railway corridor, electrical and gas lines; Long-Term Protective Action Planning Zone spreads over national border (at the moment still EU border and Schengen Area) Within the radius of 25 km around the NPP (Long-Term Protective Action Planning Zone) lives 240.000 people out of which 61,5% live in Croatia. The area reaches City of Zagreb, which as a capital of Croatia represents demographic, political and economic centre. The state emergency plan for nuclear accident foresees preventive evacuation in the precautionary action zone. Evacuation as precautionary measure in highly populated areas is rather rare; this project can improve such measure and serve as an example on European level.
