2 Assessment The course is split into 60% coursework and 40% exam You will produce coursework in year 10 and 11 – each worth 30% You will have two coursework lessons per week – one with Mr Hewitt and one with Mr Nicoll You will have one theory lesson per week with Mr Hewitt

3 Types of Applications Software Mr Hewitt

4 What is applications software? Applications software ‘software designed to carry out user related tasks’ Today we will look at applications packages ‘off the shelf software packages designed for a specific function’ Word processing Software e.g. Microsoft Word is an example of an applications package

5 Applications packages List as many application packages as you can. (do not use brand names) Word processing Spreadsheets Databases DTP, drawing and graphics Web design software Modelling packages

8 Spreadsheets ‘display numerical data in a grid or columns and rows’ What can a spreadsheet be used for? Spreadsheets statistics Display Company Information Graphs and charts Accounts and finance Manipulate data Perform calculations

9 Databases ‘an organised collection of data’ ‘Databases allow data to be stored and accessed quickly and easily’ What can a database be used for? electronic filing cabinets! - useful for holding, entering and searching for company information such as customer records and reservations

10 Desktop Publishing ‘allows production of documents with combined pictures and text’ – It is more presentation oriented then word processing software’ What are its uses? Production of newspaper reports, leaflets and posters

11 Drawing and Graphics ‘Allow creation and manipulation of images’ What can they be used for? Simple drawing and editing of images using a paint package, to full scale design work using more sophisticated packages.

12 Web design software ‘used for designing web pages by enabling the user to produce HTML scripts’

13 Modelling ‘Modelling software enables the user to create a model or simulation of the real world and then identify the effects of changing variables’ What can it be used for? Many uses – modelling the economy, 3D architects models, Computer games, population growth, nitrogen cycle – anything with variables

14 GCSE Requirements For each package mentioned you need: To understand the theory To be able to use certain features We will spend the next half term going through these packages
