1 Welcome to the Year 9 Options Evening

2 Year 9 Options Evening Purpose:
To explain the process for selecting option choices at Hitchin Girls’ School. To outline the types of qualification on offer for students at Key Stage 4. To give students an opportunity to discuss courses with appropriate staff.

4 Options 2009 Four Different Routes 2011

5 English Maths Science Core PE Core RS PSHEC Route 1 Route 2 Route 3
Core Programme English Maths Science Core PE Core RS PSHEC Options Pathways Route 1 Route 2 Route 3 Route 4

6 Route 1 Core Plus 5 GCSE’s Total 11 GCSE’s
This is the traditional route taken by our students and is still appropriate for the majority

7 Route 2 Core Plus 3 GCSE’s Plus 2 blocks of Personalised Learning and the opportunity to undertake a ‘Project’ Personalised Learning comprises additional Maths, English, ICT and other support.

8 Route 3 The Applied Learning Route Core Plus 2 GCSE’s
Plus Level 1 College or School Based Vocational Course Plus Personalised Learning, including a project This route may involve studying for half a day at an alternative venue.

9 Route 4 Core Plus Principal Diploma Learning Plus Generic Learning
Plus 1 GCSE and a project This route involves studying for one full day at an alternative venue

10 Subject Choices A Foreign Language:
French / German / Latin / (Spanish / Panjabi- via after school tuition) A Technology: Product Design Graphics Textiles Food Technology

11 Subject Choices continued..
Humanities: Geography, History, Philosophy and Ethics, Classical Civilisation Expressive Arts: Drama, Art and Design, Music, Physical Education, Dance Two possible art and Design course art and design or ceramics. Ceramics includes options in either ceramics or art and design It is not possible to choose both PE and dance

12 Choices continued… Business Studies ICT Latin Media Studies
Health and Social Care Sociology BTEC business is either run as one choice and is two period per week advanced for those targeted level 7 maths or it runs as 4 periods per week counts choices worth 4 GCSEs

13 Choices continued… North Hertfordshire College support a work related course which includes Level 1 entry courses in Hair, Beauty, Automotives and Construction. Jane Davis is here representing North Herts College and will be happy to speak to anyone who is intereseted. We have brochures available.

14 Course Choices: Diplomas
There are 5 lines of learning available at Level 1 and 2 across the area Construction and the Built Environment Creative and Media Society, Health and Development Information Technology Engineering

15 Constraints.. Dependent on viable group sizes
Some combinations are problematic due to timetabling

16 The English Baccalaureate
The current Education Minister is encouraging schools to offer a particular combination of GCSE’s entitled the E BAC. This means in addition to the core, students need to select either History or Geography. Students also need to pass a Foreign Language at grade A*-C.

17 Making Choices Whilst maintaining breadth and balance, also consider
