The INTERNET A worldwide network of computers linked together. Web Pages, E-mail, Instant Messaging, Xbox Live, iTunes downloads, etc. are all part of the Internet

WORLD WIDE WEB A part of the Internet that is unique because of its GUI and use of hyperlinks (WWW = Web Pages) GUI = Graphical User Interface

HYPERLINKS Words, pictures, or buttons that connect you to other web pages; The pointer icon will usually turn into a hand when placed over a link

HTML Stands for : “Hypertext Markup Language” Computer Programming “language” used to create web pages. Tags are command words that appear in brackets <>

HTTP Stands for “Hypertext Transfer Protocol” Basic computer rules that allow for the linking and transferring of Web pages and graphics

MODEM A piece of hardware that allows your computer to access the Internet You may have a CABLE MODEM in your house Some modems are wireless

BROWSER Any computer software that can be used to view documents on the Internet Ex: Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, Opera, Google Chrome

INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER (ISP) Collections of networked computers that provide content to subscribers (The company you pay for Internet Access) Ex. Verizon FiOS, Comcast

DIRECTORY A web site offering categorized listings of other Web sites that have been evaluated by a person

Results, or “hits”, are not evaluated by a person SEARCH ENGINE An Automated Web site that uses advanced searching software to locate other Web sites and Internet files
