What is literacy? Communication and Language - *listening and attention *understanding *speaking Writing Reading

Name the letters of the alphabet and say the sounds that they make. (Use pure sounds.) Hear the sounds at the beginning, middle and end of a word. Use their understanding of sounds to read and spell a variety of words. Read tricky words (words you cannot sound out using phonics e.g. the). Phonics

Grapheme = the visual representation of the letter Phoneme = an individual unit of sound (e.g. s,a,t,p, ch, air) Digraph = one sound made by two letters (e.g. ch, ow, ee ) Trigraph = one sound made by three letters (e.g. igh, ure ) Phonological terms:-

Phonics activities at home Segment the word of an object you wish your child to get for you. Use robot arms. Say letter sounds when looking in the mirror. (f, th, v) Play ‘I Spy’. Use magnetic letters to make words. Look for letter sounds in the environment.

Reading Show an understanding of the elements of stories such as the characters, settings and what has happened in the story. Recognise and read a variety of words. Understand that they can find things out using non-fiction books.

Reading at home Develop your child’s understanding of books and how to use them correctly. Use the pictures in a book to tell a story. Predict what will happen in a story. Discuss the story that has been read or listened to. Look for words that they can recognise in the environment. Make reading time at home an enjoyable time for both you and your child.

Writing Write their own name and other words from memory e.g. the, is, you. Hold a pencil and use it effectively to form recognisable letters, most of which are correctly formed. Use writing for a variety of different reasons. Use their understanding of phonics to spell a variety of words. Write simple sentences, beginning to use capital letters and full stops.

Writing at home Using chalks to write on the patio. Writing a shopping list and take it shopping with you. Write cards and gift tags. Write labels for objects around the house or in the garden. Write name tags for toys. Have a variety of different writing materials and papers to write on.

Language and Communication Listen with enjoyment to stories, songs, rhymes and poems and respond with relevant questions and answers. Follow instructions and answer how and why questions. Use language to imagine and recreate roles and experiences. Interact with others in a variety of ways, negotiating with others and taking turns in conversations. Use past present and future forms correctly. Use talk to organise, sequence and clarify their thinking, ideas and feelings. Develop their own narrative and explanations by connecting ideas or events.

Communication and language at home Play games with your child that involve them following instructions. Use musical instruments to experiment with making various sounds. Read rhyming books and poems. Listen to the sounds around you as you are out walking. Remind your child how to speak politely to others and use tenses correctly.
