2 Why are presentations so useful? So many jobs require you to give some sort of presentation. What do they all have in common? They have to make people listen to what they have to say.

3 What is the key to an effective presentation? It is the preparation The writing style: Writing a presentation is not the same as writing an essay. A presentation is a performance, not reading out loud. So how do we do this?

4 How do you introduce a presentation? The amazing fact The statistics The question Example: the banana Not many people know that most species of monkeys don’t eat bananas at all. About 90% of monkey species don’t eat bananas. Have you ever wondered do monkeys really eat bananas?

5 If you were to make a presentation about teddy bears, how would you introduce it? The amazing fact The statistics The question The teddy bear was actually named after president Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt About 99% of people have owned a teddy bear in their lifetime. Which toy is everyone’s favourite as a child?

6 Intonation and pause: What is the purpose of using intonation and pauses? Want people to understand what you are saying. Pauses allow people to have some time to “take in” the information. “Today” The intonation changes when it is used in the start of a sentence and at the end of a sentence. “Today is the first day of the rest of your life.” “The future is today.” Which intonation would you use in these sentences for “today” ?

7 Pausing: Blah Without pausing this is all what people will hear. Where do we pause in a sentence?,. ; ? Punctuation is usually where you need to pause.

8 TodayI went to the store and bought some milk,bread, cheeseand butter. The list: when we read out a list, where do we pause and how do we use intonation?

9 Emphasis and intensifiers: “I am getting bigger” Which ways can we emphasize “bigger” ? I am gettingbiggermuch I am getting biggerand bigger “There is nothing I can do.” There isabsolutelynothing I can do. “Have you thought about eating apples?” Have youeverthought about eating apples? “Every year more people are getting bigger.” Every year moreand morepeople are getting biggerand bigger.

10 In your groups you will be given a topic, and you will come up with a brief introduction. The amazing fact The statistics The question Use of one the methods to create your introduction Or How will you use intonation and pauses? How will you emphasize your words?
