3. The difference is being understood. As a speaker: Knowing how to raise and lower your pitch to indicate meaning while speaking will facilitate understanding. As a listener: Knowing how native speakers use intonation to indicate meaning will facilitate listening comprehension.

5. Round Robin Round 1 - Research Teams – Read article, write one question about one of the most important ideas in the article. Do not write the answer! Round 2 – Pass article to another group. Round 3 – Answer question from other groups ORALLY! Do not write the answer! Round 4 – Write an additional question about another important idea in the article. Do not write the answer!

6. Quiz Bowl Round In this round, One team member will read one question aloud from their original article and ask the other teams to answer the question aloud. Teacher keeps score for each team to see who can answer the most questions correctly.

7. Homework -due May 4th Make an audio recording with a partner indicating you both understand how to use and interpret the subtleties of American intonation. Create a scenario that expands on one sentence that changes emphasis on different words in the sentence to change the meaning. For example: I like dogs. (Means I prefer dogs over cats or other pets.) I like dogs. (Means, I don't hate dogs.) The scenario should be a series of questions and answers with each speaker clearly agreeing in intonation to confirm the meaning. For example: Speaker A: Did you go to see Titanic Friday night? Speaker B: No, I didn't see Titanic Friday night. I saw Mission Impossible. Record using a.wav file format.
