Existing Conditions continued: 85+ population is the fastest growing segment of the region’s population increasing by 55% between 1990 and 2000. 78% of older adults are homeowners. 10% of older adults in the region live below poverty. Between 1990 and 2000, the 65 and older population in the region increased by 30%.

7. Existing Conditions continued: In six out of 10 counties, growth in the older adult population exceeded growth in the general population. Three of the region’s 10 counties have among the 20 fastest growing older adult populations in the nation.
