Student Authors EAST/EMPACTS Project Our team assisted second grade students in publishing their own book. The community came together and fostered literacy in a second grade classroom. Through constructivism we incorporated our curriculum with second grade frameworks. By using various technologies we brought about success through innovation. Growth through hands on classroom teaching experiences as professionals.

Introduction There is a continual need for elementary students to be engaged in learning experiences through a variety of projects. Our team helped the class prepare for TLI testing in which each student took a story and made it their own (parody).

Course Content Objectives Review practical issues related to the teaching profession. Extend our understanding of self as a learner and future teacher. Broaden our understanding of the role of schools. Examine our beliefs and opinion about teaching.

Community Aspect The newspapers, television stations, parents/guardians, and other members of the community were invited to the celebration of these new authors which occurred in the community. We were promoting literacy by encouraging elementary students to share their own stories.

Learner Outcomes Develop higher order thinking skills. Write, clear, coherent, well-organized documents, which are substantially free of errors. Expand oral communication skills. Increase computer proficiency knowledge. Employ a variety of sources. Utilize “Soft skills”.

Project Ideas for Future Mrs. Staab, our cooperating teacher, plans to make this an annual project. Have older grades publish a book of poems. Have a school wide book publishing project, which would be more cost effective per student and would bring a sense of community to the school.
