Research at Jefferson Lab – K. A. Aniol, M.B. Epstein, D.J. Margaziotis What ? 1)Investigate the structure of nucleons and nuclei. 2)Determine at what distance the quark structure of nucleons becomes important in nuclear structure. Where? Jefferson National Accelerator Lab, Newport News, Virginia University of Mainz MaMi accelerator, Mainz, Germany How? Using electrons of 0.6 GeV to 6 GeV energy.

What probes are available to investigate matter? 1)Gravitational Force - Use any object with mass. 2)Electromagnetic Force – Use particles such as electrons, muons or photons. 3)Strong Nuclear Force – Use hadrons, like protons, neutrons, pions, etc. 4)Weak Nuclear Force – Use neutrinos or electrons. Why do we use the electromagnetic probe to investigate nuclei? 1)The electromagnetic force is known with extraordinary precision. 2)The electromagnetic force is of moderate strength.

CSULA group contributions to Hall A and Hall C Physics Research 1)Spokespersons and prime movers on three approved experiments. 2)Shared supervision of PhD theses leading to publications of results. 3)Radiation shielding design of the detector huts. 4)Design and construction of cryogenic hydrogen, helium and lead targets. 5)Sent 2 undergraduates to JLab for 3 summers of research related work. 6)Sent graduate student to JLab for MSc. thesis work on experiment setup, software development and running of experiment. 7) Significant involvement of our CSULA students in the analysis of experimental data, in target design and in radiation shielding design work for the 12 GeV upgrade. 8)Served two terms on the Hall A Coordinating Committee. 9)Faculty and students worked shifts on many collaboration experiments.

What benefits do students have working with us? 1)Exposure to state of the art nuclear physics data. 2)Learn how to do sophisticated data analysis using internationally recognized computer programs and the writing of software for data analysis. 3)Learn and use Monte Carlo techniques for the simulation of complex experimental setups. 4)Chance to spend time at JLab during summers or quarter breaks getting research experience in one of the US’s premier research facilities for nuclear and particle physics. 5)Salary and/or stipends as long as the grant provides them.
