4. I It has been my experience that younger students often become passive learners when they sit in front of a monitor. When presented the same material in a book format, the students draw on their previous knowledge of books and begin reading, actively engaged, rather than waiting to be entertained by a screen. B But, reading the pages from left-to-right, and top-to-bottom, is as far as the similarities go when reading a virtual book. These books do not have just the words on the page, but instead are layered with multi-media content that is rich with sound, motion, and the depth of links to new content and even the internet.

I It is possible to design virtual books that contain curriculum content, scaffolded for students, taking them exactly where a teacher wants them to go, paced in timing and content for their individual learning styles. Differentiation is achieved through the use of narration, supporting content, visual support, movement, interactivity through navigation and clicking, and built-in layers that support further inquiry. Younger students frequently look for links to games to play when presented with content on a monitor. The virtual book format helps to discourage this behavior as students read, forgetting that they are connected to the internet While it can sound intimidating, creating a virtual book can be as simple or as complex as you wish it to be. I have created templates that are provided freely to use and distribute. All you have to do is insert the content. A tutorial template is included that has guides built into the pages.

How to insert a Text Box Click on Insert Go to Text Box Click on slide to insert OR Click on Drawing Toolbar picture of Text Box Click on slide to insert text box onto page How to insert Pictures CLIP ART Click on Insert Go to Picture Click on Clip Art Type in your search word Choose clipart Click on insert Saved Images Click on Insert Go to Picture Click on From File Navigate to your saved image Click Insert

How to insert music Click on Insert Go to Movies and Sounds Choose sound from File or Sound from Clip Organizer OR If you want the sound to play by itself after the page turns; Click on Slide Show Go to Slide Transition Click on the black triangle next to Sound and scroll down to bottom and Choose Other Sound Go to the folder where your music is stored and select your mp3 and click Ok

8. How to Record your voice Click on Insert Go to Movies and Sounds Choose Record Sound Click on the red dot and begin your narration. Click on the square to stop. Click OK when done. Click on the picture of the speaker to hear your narration. How to insert Video Click on Insert Go to Movies from file Select your movie from the folder you put it in. Choose if you want it to play automatically when the page has turned or if you want it to play after it has been clicked. Use streaming video with teacher help

9. How to Link to a website Choice one Create a text box and then type in or paste web address. Push the enter key when your cursor is at the end of the address to activate it. http://nypl.org Choice two Right-Click on an image and then click on Hyperlink Paste or type in web address and click OK

10. Create an Active Text Box Click on view Scroll down to Toolbars Choose Control Toolbox Select Text Box When your mouse arrow turns into a crosshair, click and drag on your slide and a box will appear. This text box is only active when your presentation is playing in show mode. Text can only be edited in design mode by right clicking on box and choosing edit. --------------------------------------------- Select the check box or radio buttons to have these live options in a show.
