4 Who hosts the service? The ISI Web of Knowledge Service for UK Education is hosted by Thomson Scientific Thomson Scientific own the databases and the application MIMAS, The University of Manchester support the service JISC funded service JISC Collections negotiate and manage the agreement

6 Linking Options OpenURL linking to an institutions electronic resources Links to ‘Full Text’ –Provides links between ISI Web of Knowledge resources and electronic full text Holdings links to OPAC – up to 8 can be enabled –Links to paper journals –Links through to additional online journals –Alternative route to electronic journals Linking options are free (institution required to contact the helpdesk to enable the link option(s) )

9 As a registered user, you can take advantage of these convenient features: Select a start page Save searches to the ISI Web of Knowledge server. Set up search history alerts and citation alerts. Create custom journal lists for focused browsing and table of contents alerting (CCC subscribers only). EndNote Web Automatically sign in every time you access ISI Web of Knowledge. (Note: Users of public computers should not select this option.)

11 The Web of Science databases are: – Science Citation Index Expanded (1970 – ), Author Abstracts available from 1991 – Social Sciences Citation Index Expanded (1970– ), Author Abstracts available from 1992 – Arts and Humanities Citation Index (1975– ), Author Abstracts available from 2000 Coverage: – more than 8,500 journals & conference proceedings – 5,900 SCI1,725 SSCI1,144 ADH – average of over 24,000 new items added each week Quarterly enhancements Content of Web of Science

13 AND increases the precision of your search / narrows it down – e.g. architecture and Spain SAME (or SENT) finds terms in the same sentence – e.g. architecture same Spain OR widens the scope of your search, useful for synonyms – e.g architecture or Spain NOT excludes unwanted terms – e.g. architecture not Spain Combining Terms using Boolean Operators

14 Parentheses (brackets) can be used to override the order of precedence when combining terms using Boolean operators – e.g. architecture and (Spain or Spanish) – e.g. (architecture or building*) same (Spain or Spanish) – e.g. ((architecture or building*) same (Spain or Spanish)) and influence* Order of precedence – SAME – NOT – AND – OR Combining terms using multiple Boolean operators

15 * - wildcard or truncation for any number of characters E.g. enzym* to find enzyme, enzymatic or enzymology ? - wildcard for a single character E.g. wom?n to find woman or women $ - wildcard for a single character or no characters E.g. vapo$r to find vapor and vapour. You cannot use these at the beginning of a word and the * can only be used after three characters You can use an unlimited number of wildcards cards in a single term, and you can use different wildcards in the same term. 17 Search Options Check boxes are automatically set to default to all 3 databases. De-select boxes to search databases individually. Select date range – refers to year added to database

19 To search within the results, you can enter a topic search query in the text box and click ‘Search’ Click on article title link to view its full record Sort, Output and Analyze options Mark records individually by clicking in this box then click ‘Add to marked list’ To navigate results pages enter a page number, click the page numbers or use the arrow keys Options to refine the search on the summary results page Change number of records displayed per page here

20 Sort, Output and Analyze Options You can sort records by Latest Date, Times Cited, Relevance, First Author, Source Title, or Publication Year Use these options to output the data in a record. Select the records and data to include in the output, then click an output option. Click the ANALYZE button to go to the records analysis page when you can view and rank summary data by various fields Click the CITATION REPORT button to go generate a citation report for the set of results.

21 Click on an author name to retrieve all records by that authors of that name Click to add to marked list Return to Search Results Summary This links to articles which share one or more items in the original article’s bibliography Linking Options Click to create a Citation alert for this record This takes you to the records bibliography of cited references Shows a list of articles that cite this article Author contact information

23 Link to ‘Holdings’ information if your Institution has requested these. Institutions can request up to 8 holdings links e.g. to your Institution's OPAC and additionally to other online catalogues such as COPAC Holdings Linking

26 The ‘Marked List’ button appears when you submit records into your marked list. To go to your marked list simply click on this button This icon indicates that the record has been submitted to the ‘Marked List’ OpenURL and Full Text Linking is also available on the Search Results Summary Screen

27 Use the drop-down box to access records marked in other products Select additional fields to export by selecting the check boxes – note: may reduce numbers you can download You can sort records by Latest Date, First Author, Times Cited or Source Title Select the desired output option

31 CrossSearch Uses the same fields and operators as WoS Time span - default is Latest 5 Years Options for entries will depend on products selected Lists all the products being searched
