Climate Lesson Do Now: 1.Explain the difference between “Weather” and “Climate.

Weather vs Climate? Weather: Atmospheric conditions (temperature, rainfall, etc…) at a specific point in time (weather can change at any time). Climate: Atmospheric conditions (temperature, rainfall, etc…) of a region over a long period of time (over the period of a year or longer).

Houston Weather - Climate

Zones of Latitude -A region’s latitude (distance from the equator) has a direct impact on its climate (closer to the equator = warmer / further from the equator = colder) ….usually!

North Pole 90 N 66.32 N 23.5 N 0 23.5 S 66.32 S South Pole 90 S Tropical Wet Tropical Wet and Dry Desert Temperate Arctic LATITUDECLIMATE TYPE

30°N 30°S 30°N 60°S 60°N 60°S 60°N TROPICAL TEMPERATE POLAR

1. Which cities will have a temperate climate? 2. Which cities are warm year-round? What is this zone of latitude called? 3. Which cities are in the polar zone?

Topography - Elevation Elevation = height above sea level The higher the elevation of a region the cooler the temperature becomes…further impacting climate! Warmer Temperatures Cooler Temperatures
