Climate Change and the Cryosphere: Snow, Water, Ice and Permafrost (SWIPA)
2
SWIPA: A proposed Arctic Council project - in cooperation with IASC, CliC and IPY Presentation by: Odd Rogne Senior Advisor, AMAP & IPY IPO on behalf of Lars-Otto Reiersen, Executive Secretary of AMAP
3
Main goal of SWIPA ● To provide the Arctic Council with up-dated and relieable knowledge by ● Synthesizing present research (based on recent and ongoing projects); e.g. not a new research project
4
Rationale Recent significant cryospheric changes: - loss of sea ice faster than expected - Greenland Ice Sheet declining - declining snow cover - small glaciers & ice caps - permafrost increasingly vulnerable - changes in hydrology
5
Objectives To provide the Arctic Council with timely, up-to-date and synthesized scientific knowledge on: - Arctic cryospheric changes - Review of key processes - Summarize predictions from models - Analyse impacts on ecosystems - Analyse socio-economic impacts
6
SWIPA components:
7
Project organization Lead country Lead Key experts ------------------------------------------------ ¤ 3 components: - Sea ice - Greenland Ice Sheet - Terrestrial Cryosphere
8
Terrestrial Cryosphere Module 1: Snow cover Module 2: Permafrost Module 3: Glaciers and ice caps Module 4: Hydrology: Rivers and lakes
