2 The Water Security Agency Created in 2012, the Water Security Agency consolidates Saskatchewan’s core water management expertise and brings various provincial responsibilities for water together. 25 Year Saskatchewan Water Security Plan Goal 3: Protection of water resources – ensuring quality of water and ecosystem functions are maintained. - WSA became responsible for aquatic habitat protection portion of Environmental Management and Protection Act - WSA assumes AHP permitting previously done by MoE Fish and Wildlife branch August 20, 2015

3 Legislation that Governs the Aquatic Habitat Protection Program Environmental Management and Protection Act (EMPA), 2010 Section 38(4) Without a valid permit, no person shall, directly or indirectly: alter or cause to be altered the configuration of the bed, bank or boundary; remove, displace or add any sand, gravel or other material from, in or to the bed, bank or boundary; remove vegetation from the bed, bank or boundary; of any river, stream, lake, creek, marsh or other watercourse or water body August 20, 2015

6 Primary Goal of AHPPs To ensure aquatic habitat is preserved and maintained at the productive level which existed prior to the development activities by: Controlling soil erosion and sedimentation; Preventing the discharge of chemicals, oil, gasoline and other contaminants into water bodies; and Protecting aquatic vegetation and other aquatic habitats Image goes here August 20, 2015
