What are we going to punctuate? Activate (or provide) Prior Knowledge A comma is a punctuation mark that is used to separate words in writing. It tells us to pause when reading. The symbol for a comma is:, My dog’s favorite things to do are run, fetch, and eat. CFU Students, you already know that a comma is a punctuation mark that is used to separate words in writing. Today, we will use commas to separate words and numbers. We will punctuate dates and cities and states correctly.

Lesson to be used by EDI-trained teachers only. Concept Development To punctuate means to add the correct marks to written work. A comma is used to separate the day from the year in a date. A comma is used to separate the city from the state. A comma is used to separate the city and state, or the full date, from the rest of the sentence. A comma always has one space after it. Examples: Dates October 25, 1998 January 5, 2003, is my birthday.  Insert 1 a comma between the day and the year.  Insert a comma after the year when the full date is followed by more words. 1 place inside something City and State My mom is from Miami, Florida. Provo, Utah, is my hometown.  Insert a comma between the city and the state.  Insert a comma after the state when the city and state is followed by more words. It is important to punctuate dates and cities and states correctly because: 1. it will help you address letters and envelopes correctly.
