1 Today’s Objectives:  Review Test  Wrap-up Genocide Content  Cold War Intro

2 Test Review  Look through your test and read the comments.  I will go over questions that I believe people had the most trouble with. I will answer a few questions if there are any afterwards.  I have to collect the tests and hold them until everyone has taken it so do not put them away!

3 Ottoman Empire Armenian Genocide  Refers to the deliberate and systematic destruction of the Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire during and just after World War I (about 1915 – 1918). It was implemented through wholesale massacres and deportations, with the deportations consisting of forced marches under conditions designed to lead to the death of the deportees. The total number of resulting Armenian deaths is generally held to have been between one and one and a half million.

4 The Great Purge  Read the section on page 727 and fill in the information for the Soviet Union genocide.

5 Cambodian Genocide  When 1975 to 1979  Where Cambodia  Estimated Numbers 1.7 million people killed out of a population of 8 million (21% of the country's population).  A small Communist group, the Khmer Rouge, grew in popularity in Cambodia, and by 1975 was able to take over.  In asserting its new power, the Party began a campaign of cleansing from 1975 to 1978. The state under their rule required the destruction of cities and the foreign-educated elite in order to rustify, or to make the country more rural. The goal was a centralized communal organization of atheistic factory workers and peasant farmers free of external support. Cities were raided and people relocated to communal farms. Most people were left to starve or work to death.  Ethnically, the targets of the cleansing were Vietnamese and Chinese nationals, Muslims, and Buddhist monks. They all were virtually, if not entirely, eliminated from the population by expulsion, execution, or starvation.

7 Rwandan Genocide  This next clip will feature a song made for the country of Rwanda by Wyclef Jean in 2008 in remembrance of the genocide. You will see several clips from the movie Hotel Rwanda which is based on a story from within the genocide:

8 Rwandan Genocide  Why did the Genocide Begin? There were long term disputes over land between Hutus and Tutsis The assassination of the Hutu President of Rwanda was blamed on Tutsi’s  The genocide happened over 100 days in 1994 and over 1,000,000 people were killed!

9 War Comes to Sarajevo  Read the entire section, work to develop an understand of what is happening and fill in the blanks on your Genocide chart.

10 Nazi Genocide  Use what you know to complete this section

14 Cold War  Complete the worksheet using your Atlas, when you are done go back and read the entire worksheet.  The goal is to develop an understanding of the events that unfolded over the Cold War. This will be helpful when we begin to discuss some more details!
