INTRODUCTION A quick look at how Whitworth is using Tableau to visualize the Annual Fund Data A more general Tableau Session is being given by Ken Brown - our CIO in the hour following this session. He will talk about campus wide use of Tableau to visualize data Ken Brown built all of the Tableau Visualizations in this presentation. The Tableau visualizations you see will focus on Annual Fund Giving, but everything you see is intended to work with all giving, or athletic giving, etc. Every visualization has hundreds of filters settings and parameters. I have selected just one or two, but keep in mind all the possibilities you are not seeing The Annual Fund (AF) and All Giving Projects are still work in progress, so please excuse some rough edges Coeur d’Alene, Idaho

OVERVIEW OF THE DATA DOWNLOAD AND STEPS TO FEED TABLEAU THE NEEDED CONTRIBUTION AND DONOR DATA At Whitworth we use Colleague Advancement and UniData as our ERP For this presentation, it really doesn’t matter. You just have to get the data out of your system and into a flat file for Tableau to read. Two major files are downloaded, the CONTRIBUTION file (with supporting data) and the CONSTITUENT file (with supporting data). The CONSTITUENT ID is crucial in linking the CONTRIBUTION Data with the specific DONOR Data A nightly job is scheduled (for us it is a UNIX cron job calling UniData routines) to run the download and place the flat files in the directory Tableau is expecting them The downloaded data is also used for various other projects, including web interfaces for Colleague Advancement since most of our MGOs don’t go directly into Colleague. Tableau has a scheduled process to upload the data Coeur d’Alene, Idaho

SUMMARY There are so many ways to look at contribution data. Some of the ways you visualize it may help you understand how your donations come in. Other ways may enlighten the team to new approaches to fund raising! Tableau puts the tool in the hands of the end user, they can slice and dice, filter and drill, and look at an amazing amount of data and do their own analysis without IT assistance after the initial setup. I hope you get some ideas of your own about how you might visualize your institution’s data Coeur d’Alene, Idaho
