BACTERIA WHAT IS BACTERIA – a single celled organism that is a prokaryote THREE BASIC SHAPES OF BACTERIA ARE ROD-LIKE SPHERICAL SPIRAL

8
KINGDOMS ARCHEABACTERIA –live in extreme environments, ex. Hot springs, acid, intestines, mud, sewage EUBACTERIA – in your body, useful or harmless to you,
9
REPRODUCTION Asexual/binary fission – Reproductive process that involves only one parent and produces offspring that is identical to the parent. MITOSIS? Sexual/conjugation – one bacterium transfers its genetic material into another bacterium. Figure 13 page 196 in your book
10
SURVIVAL NEEDS FOOD – Autotrophs and heterotrophs RESPIRATION – process of breaking down food to release energy. Most need oxygen, some do not. ENDOSPORE FORMATION – when conditions are unfavorable for growth. In order to survive these conditions bacteria need to form endospores, a small, rounded, thick walled, resting cell that form inside a bacterial cell. Can resist freezing, heating, and drying

BACTERIA AND THE LIVING WORLD FUEL – Natural gas, Bacteria produce the methane gas used for fuel FOOD – Bacteria help make certain foods buy giving the food its flavor and structure. Example – cheese, yogurt, apple cider, olives, sauerkraut ENVIRONMENT – Recycling, act as decomposers Cleanup – breakdown oil and dangerous chemicals
