2
e-Atlas To obtain support from member associations from developed countries: identify and partner with a member association in a developing country find sustainable solutions to increase accessibility to insulin and diabetes supplies in that country Aim Aim Outcome Process Guidelines Countries Contact
3
e-Atlas That member associations from developed countries will consider twinning with a select number of associations in developing countries to initiate and carry out projects to improve accessibility. The intention is to work with a small number of associations instead of trying to tackle the problem globally. The successful twinning projects could then be adapted and used as models for others. Desired outcome Aim Outcome Process Guidelines Countries Contact
4
e-Atlas Process Identify developing country to ‘twin’ with Identify person responsible in your association Initiate contact through Task Force Initiate direct contact with potential partner member association Use guidelines to develop a project plan Aim Outcome Process Guidelines Countries Contact
5
e-Atlas Process Implement and execute plan Report at follow-up meeting next June/September Show outcome with partnering member association at the Association Village of the 19 th World Diabetes Congress in 2006 Aim Outcome Process Guidelines Countries Contact
6
e-Atlas Guidelines Build the local infrastructure - select the country to partner with - identify person responsible in your association - establish contact with the member association in the partnering country Define the magnitude of the problem - Estimate number of people with diabetes using insulin - Estimate average daily insulin dose - Calculate insulin needs for the country - Revise estimates based on actual need Aim Outcome Process Guidelines Countries Contact
7
e-Atlas Guidelines Identify the reasons for inaccessibility - economic - taxes - distribution - storage - local policies - others Find practical solutions - short-term - medium-term Aim Outcome Process Guidelines Countries Contact
8
e-Atlas Guidelines Implement short-term solutions (first two years). Develop project plan: - assess amount and type of insulin and other diabetes supplies needed - make a budget estimate - identify sources of funding - identify suppliers and recipient(s) - find out recipient country’s rules about donated drugs (follow WHO’s guidelines on donated drugs) - identify how the supplies will be shipped Aim Outcome Process Guidelines Countries Contact
9
e-Atlas Guidelines Develop project plan (cont.): - identify who will receive shipment and clear customs - find out how the insulin will be stored - find out who the people with diabetes are who will receive the supplies - assess diabetes education needs for diabetes healthcare team and people with diabetes and their families - find out how the supplies will be distributed - identify person(s) accountable for distribution - put reporting process in place - evaluate project annually - submit report to major stakeholders Aim Outcome Process Guidelines Countries Contact
10
e-Atlas Guidelines Implement medium-term solutions (third to fifth year). Develop project plan: - f ind solutions to problems identified - help develop and implement a national diabetes care programme - consider involvement of other non-governmental organizations - promote diabetes education for healthcare professionals and people with diabetes and their families - identify ways in which insulin and diabetes supplies can become available and affordable - identify ways to reduce cost of diabetes care Aim Outcome Process Guidelines Countries Contact
11
Guidelines Request for assistance Ask for info Project proposal Define needs Identify ‘champion’ – person or group Estimate budget Clarify nation’s law on donated drugs Plan process Evaluate proposal Verify needs Pilot project to test logistics Agree on pilot project Collect supplies Source funding Shipment Receive shipment Carry out project Ready for next phase Evaluate outcome Implement next phase Find long-term solutions
