© copyright 2002 - Amadeus GTD S.A. / all rights reserved / unauthorized use and disclosure strictly forbidden A Moving experience: TPF system transfer using SRDF Alastair Heslop TPF User Group, Orlando April 23, 2002

© copyright 2002 - Amadeus GTD S.A. / all rights reserved / unauthorized use and disclosure strictly forbidden Background l British Airways TPF systems outsourced to Amadeus w Second TPF system with Res and DCS for hosted carriers, and BA Cargo, Flight Operations and Engineering systems. w Reservations functionality to be transferred to Amadeus System User relatively quickly. w BA platform still required for some years for Inventory, Flight Planning, Departure Control systems. l Systems to be moved from London to Erding

© copyright 2002 - Amadeus GTD S.A. / all rights reserved / unauthorized use and disclosure strictly forbidden What had to be moved l Main TPF system (16x2 mod BSS, 104x2 mod application sub-system, 4.5GB volumes) - TPF4 l Second TPF system (32x2 mod, 3GB) - TPF3 l VM systems w Development w TPF test systems w Ancillary l MVS l CMC

© copyright 2002 - Amadeus GTD S.A. / all rights reserved / unauthorized use and disclosure strictly forbidden How to do it? l Dump & Restore w Physical transfer of tapes w Remote tape connection l Disk to disk copy w Mainframe arbitrated w Controller to controller (SRDF)

© copyright 2002 - Amadeus GTD S.A. / all rights reserved / unauthorized use and disclosure strictly forbidden How it was done l VM & MVS w Systems copied and tailored w Libraries, CMS disks etc. dumped, hand carried to Erding and restored over a week-end w Some catch-up via dump to tape, remote tape copy and restore from copy tape w ‘Shadow’ MVS & VM systems remained in London for support of the TPF systems (Recoup/PDU for TPF3 system, post-processing, performance analysis, etc.) l TPF, including General Files, done by SRDF

© copyright 2002 - Amadeus GTD S.A. / all rights reserved / unauthorized use and disclosure strictly forbidden SRDF Issues l Wanted to control from TPF, but TPF Controls were still in development l TPF controls had only been developed and tested on a TPF4.1 system. What to do about TPF3.1? l Main system moving EMC 5430 to EMC 5430, but second system EMC 5200 to EMC 5430 l First TPF use over this sort of distance (approx 1000 KM - 600 miles)

© copyright 2002 - Amadeus GTD S.A. / all rights reserved / unauthorized use and disclosure strictly forbidden SRDF Issues (cont) l Concerns over how long the process was going to take and what impact it might have on the system l After transfer of MVS, Loader General File/GDS disks needing to be copied back to London until TPF systems moved

© copyright 2002 - Amadeus GTD S.A. / all rights reserved / unauthorized use and disclosure strictly forbidden SRDF Controls for TPF l Initial check out done within Erding datacentre l Main testing done from London after Comms links established between London & Erding datacentres l We found a number of problems with the code, but we had a good working relationship with EMC developers and they fixed problems quickly l Some discussion about commissioning a 3.1 version of code, but dropped in favour of using a copy of TPF4.1 BSS to run controls

© copyright 2002 - Amadeus GTD S.A. / all rights reserved / unauthorized use and disclosure strictly forbidden The set up - General files TPF systems & ‘shadow’ MVS system in London MVS & VM systems in Erding EMC 5430 EMC 5200

© copyright 2002 - Amadeus GTD S.A. / all rights reserved / unauthorized use and disclosure strictly forbidden The process - General files l LGF packs copied as part of “Support systems” move (Recoup pack for 3.1 system left in London). Transfer initiated and monitored from TPF4 system in London l Load run on MVS system in Erding; checked out on test system under VM l “Refresh-Resume” run to copy back to London the updated tracks on that one volume l Load actioned on live system in London

© copyright 2002 - Amadeus GTD S.A. / all rights reserved / unauthorized use and disclosure strictly forbidden The set up - TPF3.1 system TPF3 system in London Future TPF3 system in Erding EMC 5430 x 2 EMC 5200 x 4 TPF4 under VM in Erding, console in London 6cyl HDAs mounted as Gen Files

© copyright 2002 - Amadeus GTD S.A. / all rights reserved / unauthorized use and disclosure strictly forbidden The process - TPF3 system l ‘Access’ volumes on target units plusTPF4 BSS copy disks defined to VM as unsupported devices l TPF4 system established; ‘access’ volumes mounted as General Files l Data transfer initiated and monitored from this TPF4 system l At designated outage time, TPF3 system cycled down, tidied up and deactivated l Transfer completed from TPF4 system

© copyright 2002 - Amadeus GTD S.A. / all rights reserved / unauthorized use and disclosure strictly forbidden The transfer - TPF3 system

© copyright 2002 - Amadeus GTD S.A. / all rights reserved / unauthorized use and disclosure strictly forbidden The transfer - TPF3 system

© copyright 2002 - Amadeus GTD S.A. / all rights reserved / unauthorized use and disclosure strictly forbidden The set up - TPF4.1 system TPF4 system in London EMC 5430 x 8 Future TPF4 system in Erding EMC 5430 x 8

© copyright 2002 - Amadeus GTD S.A. / all rights reserved / unauthorized use and disclosure strictly forbidden The process - TPF4 system l Data transfer initiated and monitored from the TPF4 system in London l To allow for contingencies, data transfer started on Thursday evening, suspended Friday morning and resumed on Friday evening l In the lead up to designated outage time, “back-end” processors cycled down, tidied up and deactivated l At designated outage time, final CPU cycled down and tidied up. Data transfer completed and processor deactivated

© copyright 2002 - Amadeus GTD S.A. / all rights reserved / unauthorized use and disclosure strictly forbidden The transfer - TPF4 system

© copyright 2002 - Amadeus GTD S.A. / all rights reserved / unauthorized use and disclosure strictly forbidden The connectivity l 2 RLDs in each EMC Symmetrix l 4 InRange 9801s in each location; each Symmetrix connected to 2 different 9801s (or 4 for the 5430s connected to ‘online’ 5200s) l 2 x T3 links between the locations

© copyright 2002 - Amadeus GTD S.A. / all rights reserved / unauthorized use and disclosure strictly forbidden Problems l Quite a few during beta testing of TPF controls, but all quickly resolved l Some with the connectivity during rehearsals, but all resolved for the real event l One or two instances of “phantom invalid track” when completing data transfer; fix for this problem in newer microcode

© copyright 2002 - Amadeus GTD S.A. / all rights reserved / unauthorized use and disclosure strictly forbidden Conclusion l Take time to understand the product and build your scripts l It worked well for us and contributed to a very successful set of system transfers
