Department of Computing Programming One of the major changes to the ICT curriculum recently has been the introduction of programming Liverpool College is a CAS Lead School and we are one of only a handful of schools offering Computing at A Level. At Key Stage 3 and 4, we offer programming opportunities and experience of electronics

11. The Computer Network The college has a campus-wide optical fibre network allowing access to files, e-mail and web services from anywhere in the College and beyond!

12. Linking to home: Remote Desktop It is possible for pupils to connect to the school network from home allowing access to shared files, software the College Intranet and My Documents!

13. Department of Computing Computing at Key Stage 3 All pupils have Computing for 65 minutes per week in Years 7 and 8. They are given different case studies to help develop their skills in a ‘real-life’ situation. They are also taught how and why computers are so important in today’s society. This includes responsible use of the Internet.

14. Department of Computing Computing in Year 7 Year 7 pupils start their studies by covering the basics including Word Processing. They learn how to present their work in their ePortfolios. Later in the year, they cover the use of spreadsheets, databases, DTP and Graphics software. Programming including functions and procedures and games design. Theory of binary and data representation.

15. Computing in Year 8 Advanced PowerPoint and graphic design. Standard algorithms such as linear search and bubble sort. Text-based programming in Visual Basic.Net. Advanced spreadsheets. Electronic circuit design and programming.

16. Computing in Year 9 Foundation Project Qualification (FPQ). Electronic circuit design and programming. Systems life cycle. Binary and Boolean algebra. Fetch-execute cycle. Logic gates. Research skills.

17. ePortfolios We don’t have exercise books in Computing. Instead pupils present all their work in a special website called an ePortfolio. We use the on-line Weebly service which makes this a much more professional and easy-to-use process.

18. Computing Club Every lunchtime and after school, the pupils can come into one of the Computing rooms or the library and get on with work using the computers. Homework can be completed, research done or they can just try out new things on their own. There is also a computer programming club that meets once per week

19. Department of Computing Network facilities The College Network uses Windows 7 and Windows 8 computers. We have started the move to “Cloud Computing” meaning more power with a much smaller carbon footprint. This allows us to continue using older equipment whilst retaining the benefits of a newer operating system.

20. Communication The College network has a 100Mb fibre-optic Internet connection. There is also a College Intranet which enables pupils and staff to publish web pages for use within the school. E-mail is also used widely by all staff and pupils.

21. Department of Computing Parents in the Upper School can now access important information via a secure web service. The “Parent Portal” allows you to read school reports, attendance data and other information.
