A bad picture can distort your understanding of data. The area principle states that the area occupied by a part of a graph should correspond to the size of the value it represents. The Area Principle

Sankofa Rewind: The 5 W’s The WQuestion Answered WhoThe individuals or objects being observed WhatVariables observed WhenWhen observers collected the data WhereWhere the observations took place WhyWhy the observers have collected the data
7
Example: Find the 5 W’s Last month, a writer for SHAPE magazine visits an Arby’s restaurant chain store in Cheltenham to collect data for each of the sandwiches it sells. During her visit she noted the type of meat in the sandwich, the type of meat in the sandwich, the number of calories, and the serving size in ounces. The data will be used to assess the nutritional value of the different sandwiches.
8
Think Pair Share You have 5 minutes to come up with a description of data with all 5 W’s. You must write your description in full sentences. Then you will share your description with a partner at your desk. Your partner will have to determine what the 5 w’s in your description are. (5 minutes) We will hear from a 2 groups as an entire group (5 minutes)

How to set up your graph! Y Axis (This is for your dependent variable)
10
How to set up your graph! X Axis (This is for your independent variable)

TAILS T T - Title Teachers’ Favorite Singer
12
TAILS T - T - Title A - Axis Teachers’ Favorite Singer Y Axis = Amount of Teachers X Axis = Singer
13
TAILS T - T - Title A – Axis I – Interval S – Scale Teachers’s Favorite Singer Decide on an appropriate scale for each axis. Choose an interval that lets you make the graph as large as possible for your paper and data
14
How to determine scale & intervals The interval is decided by your scale. In this case your scale would be from 2 – 22 and you want the scale to fit the graph. The best interval would be to go by 5’s Favorite Singer Number of Teachers Beyonce22 Usher15 Anita Baker Jill Scott 11 5 Future 2
15
T – Title A – Axis I – Interval L – Labels S – Scale Teachers’ Favorite Singer 0 5 10 15 20 25 Beyonce Usher Anita Baker Future LABEL your bars or data points Singers Give the bars a general label. What do those words mean? Number of Teachers Label your Y Axis. What do those numbers mean? Jill Scott

Survey Activity I want you to spend the next 3 minutes creating a frequency table for your classmates. (Examples: Shoe Size, month of birth, type of cell phone height). CATEGORYTALLYCOUNT ANDRIODIIII4 IPODIII3

Collect Data You now have 10 minutes to survey all of your classmates and collect data for your survey. When you are done, go back to your desk and start creating your bar graph.
