4 What is – 4 th grade U.S. Geography students do not know the names, locations, state capitals, and major land and water features of the 50 states. What should be – 4 th grade U.S. Geography students should know the names, locations, state capitals, and major land and water features of the 50 states.

5 1.0 Names of the 50 states. 1.2 Memorize shapes of states. 1.1 List 50 States names 2.0 State and Nations Capital 2.2 Location of Nations Capital 2.1 List of State Capitals with Corresponding State name 3.0 Geographic Regions 3.4 West3.3 East3.2 South3.1 North 4.0 Major Rivers and Lakes 4.2 Lakes and Locations 4.1 Rivers and Locations

6 The skills of the students before this unit should be that the students can read a map and be able to find the United States on a world map. The students should also be able to find their home state on a map of the United States.

7 1.0 – Names of the 50 States 1.1 – List the names of the 50 states Students would be provided a list of the 50 states to memorize. Assessment 1 – Timed quiz where students write out as many of the state names as they can in the time allotted. 1.2 – Memorize shapes of states Students would be given a map of the United States that has all the names of the states filled in. The student should work on associating the shape of the state with the state name. Assessment – Quiz with individual state shapes, student will be asked the name of a particular state.

8 2.0 – States and Nations’ Capital 2.1 - List of State Capitals with Corresponding State name Students will be given a list of state capitals and it’s state. Assessment- Quiz where student will be given state and then have to provide the state’s capital. 2.2 - Location of Nations Capital Students will be told about the nation’s capital (Washington D.C.) Assessment- Student will be asked the name and location of the nation’s capital as a question on the state capital quiz and on the final exam. Assessment – Short essay that tells facts about Washington, D.C.

9 3.0 – Geographic Regions - Know the states and geographic characteristics of each of these regions of the country 3.1 North 3.2 South 3.3 East 3.4 West Assessment-Essay on a particular region of the country that talks about the different types of land features, water features, and major industries of that region. Assessment – Game where students are split into two teams, State names, or geographic characteristics, are spoken out loud by instructor, students then as a team decide which region the state or feature are located.

10 4.0 – Major Rivers and Lakes 4.1 – Rivers and Locations Important to know where major rivers are in relation to states 4.2 – Lakes and Locations Important to know where major lakes are in relation to states Assessment 1 - Quiz that involves a map of United States with rivers and lakes highlighted. Students should be able to label these water features. Assessment 2 – Quiz that involved a map with major water features labeled and students are asked to label neighboring states.
