EARLY LIFE Born on August 15, 1769 in Corsica, France (island in the Mediteranean) General at age 26 was a whopping 5’2” tall (strong personality) Napoleon Complex???? Married Josephine de Beauharnais- Leader in French society (bonus for Napoleon) One of the best generals of all time

RISE OF NAPOLEON 1799- 1814 was known as the Napoleonic Era Italy- French army was weak/ poorly equipped. Napoleon improved conditions of troops (got support by boosting moral) Napoleon got the Sardinians (people in Italy) to make peace Austria 1797- Forces them to sign a treaty that gave France control of northern Italy The Directory- new government after Robespierre got killed (Afraid Napoleon would try and take over) To keep him away from France, they sent him to fight the British in Egypt. Got defeated (did not tell the truth about the loss…. Why?)

NAPOLEONIC ERA BEGINS 1799- coup d’ etat gives him power (he becomes a dictator) People accepted him as dictator (needed stability from all the chaos) Controlled army, navy, appointing/dismissing officials

ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN GOV’T Napoleon creates a new constitution. Lets the people vote this is called plebiscite (people vote yes or no, could not Make any suggestions) Napoleonic Codes – laws created by Napoleon that were to be followed in every French Territory that he controlled/conquered Created a public education system: high schools, universities, technical schools why would he do this?

Concordant- fixed relations with Catholic Church Recognized most French citizens were Catholic, but still gave freedom of religion/ gave land back that was taken during French Rev. By 1802, Napoleon was able to either make peace with Great Britain, Austria, and Russia or get them to desert each other

OH NO HE DIDN’T His supporters want his family to rule forever plebiscite vote declares him Emperor (what was plebescite?) 1804- the pope comes to crown the couple Napoleon takes the crown from the pope’s hands and puts it on himself Why did Napoleon do this? To show that the power of the empire rests with Napoleon, not the Pope

GROWTH OF THE EMPIRE Looking at the maps you duplicated for HW, how did Napoleon expand France’s empire? Dominates Europe– Used his military strength to force Austria and Prussia to sign peace treaties with him as he expanded east; Russia aligned with France Abolishes the Holy Roman Empire Unifies northern Italy under his control Lets relatives rule over countries he conquers.

NATIONALISM Nationalism – love for your country Conquered countries used the Napoleonic Code (for rid of feudalism, just like French Revolution) Spread military techniques Feelings of loyalty and patriotism for Napoleon and France spread among the people he conquered (Declaration of the Rights of Man made them happy) This also made his enemies hate him more.
