2.  Section 6.3 there are seven awards that can be granted:  AOS Show Trophy  AOS Show Trophy Certificate  Gold Certificate  Silver Certificate  Artistic Certificate  Educational Exhibit Certificate  Certificate for Meritorious Arrangement 2

3. 6.3.3 : The American Orchid Society offers a Show Trophy Certificate upon request to affiliated societies staging shows outside the United States where judging is not performed exclusively by certified AOS judges. This certificate award is intended to encourage the improvement of the standard of exhibits and may be given by persons who are recognized in their country as qualified to judge 3

4.  6.3.2 of Handbook on Judging and Exhibition  Intended to encourage the improvement of the standards of exhibits.  It is available upon request to the AOS to any show staged by an affiliated society within or outside the United States  That has secured AOS sanction for the show (5.6.1)  Including the exclusive use of AOS judges for award judging. 4

5.  6.3.2 of Handbook on Judging and Exhibition  Intended to encourage excellence by recognizing in competition the best collective material meritoriously displayed in public exhibition ( Ref: 7.4 Principles of Design).  Only one trophy may be awarded at a show.  The awarding of the trophy shall not be obligatory.  The pooling of resources by groups or individuals is permitted. 5

8.  All exhibits entered in a show shall be considered eligible for the AOS Show Trophy, except in the case of 6.3.2(2), when only the nominated exhibits are eligible.  All certified senior and emeritus judges present may participate.  Excepted those who must disqualify themselves per 4.8 (2) and the chair whose vote is reserved to break a tie.  Should chair needs to disqualify himself/herself the eligible judges shall elect, among themselves, the reserve judge.  Special procedure set in case of less than three eligible judges available.  Each judge voting must submit a ballot in favor of the one exhibit he/she scores highest (as least 80 points) on point scale 7.3.3, or note "No Award" on the ballot if no exhibit scores at least 80 points.  All ballots must be signed to qualify 8

9.  For any exhibit to win the trophy, two-thirds of the judges present and voting must vote in favor of some exhibit. If more than one-third of the voting judges vote "No Award", the trophy shall not be awarded  The exhibit which receives the highest number of votes shall win the trophy.  Tie Breakers:  If a tie in votes exists between two or more exhibits, the exhibit with the highest score shall win  If a tie still exists, the chair of AOS judging shall cast the tie breaking vote to award the trophy. If the chair is not eligible to vote, the designated reserve judge shall break the tie. 9

10.  Each judge present may nominate one choice for best exhibit excluding his/her own exhibit.  All nominations must be signed to qualify.  Those judges whose exhibits are not nominated may participate in the trophy balloting process, which shall follow the procedure in 6.3.2(4) and (5). 10

12.  6.3.1 of Handbook on Judging and Exhibition  The Gold Certificate shall not be limited in number at any show. Criteria are as follows: 1. The Gold Certificate shall be awarded to the exhibit that wins the AOS Show Trophy if the average of all scores is at least 90 points. 2. Any accredited judge may nominate another exhibit(s) for a Gold Certificate to be scored according to the Point Scale used for the AOS Show Trophy … (See Note 1) 3. An exhibit or group of orchid plants or cut-flower exhibit may also be nominated by an accredited judge for a Gold Certificate on the basis that it is exceptional, unique or worthy of high recognition but that it does not meet the usual requirements of the Show Trophy. Educational value and creativity may be part of the consideration (See Note 2) 12

13.  6.3.1 of Handbook on Judging and Exhibition  Note 1 : Scored according to the Point Scale used for the AOS Show Trophy, paragraph 7.3.3, and all eligible judges or, in a large show, where there are many judges, an appointed team of at least five accredited judges may score it. Any exhibit that is scored an average of at least 90 points on this Point Scale shall be awarded a Gold Certificate.  Note 2: It is preferable that all eligible judges vote; however, in a large show the chairman may appoint a team of at least five judges to vote on the nomination. A Gold Certificate shall be awarded by a positive vote by at least ¾ of those voting. 13

14.  6.3. 7 of Handbook on Judging and Exhibition  The Silver Certificate shall not be limited in number at any show. Criteria are as follows: 1. The Silver Certificate shall be awarded to the exhibit that wins the AOS Show Trophy if the average of all scores is between 85 and 89 points. 2. Any accredited judge may nominate another exhibit(s) for a Silver Certificate to be scored according to the Point Scale used for the AOS Show Trophy … (See Note 1) 3. An exhibit or group of orchid plants or cut-flower exhibit may also be nominated by an accredited judge for a Silver Certificate on the basis that it is exceptional, unique or worthy of high recognition but that it does not meet the usual requirements of the Show Trophy. Educational value and creativity may be part of the consideration (See Note 2) 14

20.  The point score of the Show Trophy winner determines if that exhibit wins a Gold or a Silver Certificate.  If an exhibit was granted the Show Trophy AND also was granted a Gold or Silver Certificate  Two award forms must be completed.  Remember that while the Show Trophy doesn’t need a description or an awards image, the Gold Certificate or the Silver Certificate do.  The Show Trophy winner must receive a Gold or Silver Certificate before any other exhibit may be nominated for additional certificates.  No additional certificates can be granted with a point score higher than the point score of the exhibit that won Show Trophy. 20

21.  6.3.4 of the Handbook of Judging and exhibition.  Awarded to an outstanding exhibit which the judges consider to be exceptionally artistic.  The award shall be given only upon the unanimous decision of the judging team assigned.  Judges are expected to consider the exhibit with the point scale in paragraph 7.3.5 in mind.  Although actual point scoring is optional, no award should be made to an exhibit which a judge believes could not score at least 90 points.  Recorded in awards form, described and photographed. 21

24.  6.3.5 of the Handbook on Judging an Exhibition.  Awarded to an outstanding exhibit in the flower arrangement class of a show in which orchid flowers are dominant  Is available to AOS-sanctioned shows and may be awarded by nationally accredited decorative or flower arrangement judges.  If judges without these qualifications are used to judge flower arrangements, they may recommend an award, but a team of AOS certified judges assigned for the purpose must confirm the award.  If nationally accredited flower show judges make the award, this fact shall be noted and authenticated by the chair on the summary sheet.  The award should be given only once at any show.  Record of award in numbered award form.  Photographic records are not required. 24

26.  6.3.4 of the Handbook on Judging and Exhibition  Awarded to an exhibit that furthers the knowledge and education of the public regarding orchids. Consideration should also be given to displays that further conservation awareness.  The decision whether or not to award this certificate shall be made by a judging team assigned for the purpose.  An exhibit must receive a score of at least 80 points using the point scales in paragraph 7.3.4. [ Scale 7.3.4 (1) is used for exhibits that promote orchid conservation.]  An exhibit shall receive this award only once. There is no limit to the number of certificates which may be awarded at any one show. Award form is filled, description and photos are required.  For exhibits which further conservation awareness, the judging team is encouraged to consider the exhibit and its message in light of the AOS Conservation Policy, as adopted by the Trustees in October, 1989. 26

27. "Preservation and protection of orchids and their habitats throughout the world are among the primary goals of the AOS. The AOS encourages and engages in worthwhile activities to these ends, including but not limited to: - Propagation and cultivation of orchid species to maintain a diverse gene pool, especially for endangered species. - Formalization of procedures to ensure the protection and maintenance of orchid species in private and research collections where neglect endangers the plants. - Development and dissemination of proper cultural information for species to ensure their survival and propagation. - Support the development of national parks and nature preserves worldwide. - Salvage and rescue of orchid species and other flora where preservation is not possible or practical. - Management of orchid habitats, endangered or not.'' 27

In addition and per 6.3.7 of the Handbook, Exhibit 3 shall also be granted a Silver Certificate 37

Handbook states that the exhibit which receives the highest number of votes shall win the trophy. Since both exhibit 2 and Exhibit 3 got the same number of votes (3/3) a tie breaker must happen. First tie breaker per the Handbook is the higher score: Exhibit 2 score is 84 (83.67 rounded to the next whole number) and Exhibit 3 score is 85 (85.33) rounded to the next whole number. The first tie breaker favors Exhibit 3 which is granted the Show Trophy with a point score of 85 points. Per 6.3.7 of the Handbook, Exhibit 3 shall also be granted a Silver Certificate. 38

39. Since two-thirds of the judges present and voting voted in favor of some exhibit, the award shall be granted. Handbook states that the exhibit which receives the highest number of votes shall win the trophy. Since both exhibit 2 and Exhibit 3 got the same number of votes ( 3/3) a tie breaker must happen. First tie breaker per the Handbook is the higher score: Exhibit 2 score is 85 and Exhibit 3 score is 86. The first tie breaker favors Exhibit 3 which is granted the Show Trophy with a point score of 86 points. Per 6.3.7 of the Handbook, Exhibit 3 shall also be granted a Silver Certificate 39

40. The issue then becomes if Exhibit 2 shall also be granted a Silver Certificate. This is what the Handbook states : “Any accredited judge may nominate another exhibit(s) for a Silver Certificate to be scored according to the Point Scale used for the AOS Show Trophy, paragraph 7.3.3, and all eligible judges or, in a large show, where there are many judges, an appointed team of at least five accredited judges may score it. Any exhibit that is scored an average of at between 85 and 89 points on this Point Scale shall be awarded a Silver Certificate.” 40

41. Any judge can nominate Exhibit 2 and it could be point scored and see if it meets the requirement set in this part of the Handbook. MAYOR CAVEAT: The only valid point score that could yield Exhibit 2 a SC is 85 points no exhibit granted a SC can have a point score that matches or is higher than the point score of the exhibit that won the ST and a combined SC. 41
