Today in this lesson We are learning to Identify the keywords that enable us to search for specific information extend and refine search methods to be more efficient using AND, OR and NOT

Read the following instructions carefully and stand up when you think the instructions refer to you.

Stand up if you are a male

Stand up if you are 15

Stand up if you are a male AND 15 What effect has AND had on the number of people who have stood up?

Stand up if are a female

Stand up if you are a female AND 15. What effect has AND had on the number of people who have stood up?

Stand up if your are a male OR are 15 years old What effect has OR had on the number of people who have stood up?

Stand up if are a male OR a female, AND you are 15 years old.

Start the engine Search engines are very large databases of web page files. The files are found electronically by ‘spiders’ which crawl around the Internet seeking relevant files. There are two types of search engines: Individual and Meta (or clustering) search engines.

To search for information in a search engine type in keywords. Be specific – use more than one word. Find me if you can

By being specific and using as many keywords as possible: there will be fewer results to look through the results will be more accurate.

This is how a search engine interprets your keywords: Keywords Search Engine InterpretationResults The Lion KingThe AND Lion AND King 1,090,000 “The Lion King”“As a whole phrase” 238,000 “The Lion King” London “As a whole phrase” AND London 12,100 “The Lion King” “musical London” “As a whole phrase” AND “As a whole phrase” 210

Most search engines automatically insert AND between each word. There are other operators you can add yourself between words called Boolean operators. These include: OR, NOT. By using AND, OR, NOT you can narrow the search and focus on the exact information you need.

Find me if you can Match the numbers to the statements. You’ll have to place all the numbers to complete this exercise!

Understanding the meaning of AND, OR and NOT when searching for information.

Search for your name Type your name into Google search box –How many hits do you get Type your name in quotes –How many hits do you get?

AND/OR Was there a difference in the number of hits? –Why? Using quotes make the search more specific. It,means the search must contain both words I.E. Its like using AND Not using quotes is like using an OR it will look for either words.

Rules to remember OR gives you more. AND gives you less as only a small number of people contain both properties.

Introducing the word NOT.

Stand up if you are a male AND 15.

Stand up if you are NOT a female AND you are NOT 16. The same pupils should still be standing!!! This shows we can get the same results by asking different questions.

Using NOT Helps eliminate certain words Type Kylie and search –How many hits do you get? Type Kylie –Minogue –What happens?
