DG Environment has initiated the implementation of EMAS easy Ecomapping is a major part of the EMAS toolkit for SMEs since 1st edition in 1998 EMAS Easy Capacity building programmes : –in new member states 2004-2005: Baltics, Hungary, Poland 35 consultants 60 SMEs –in southern Europe 2007-2008: Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece, Malta, Cyprus, France 35 consultants 70 SMEs

Results : EMAS easy brings significant advantages to small SMEs It takes 150% less effort in implementation in the SME It can cost 80 % less in verification and certification It uses 3 times less individual consulting effort It uses informal approaches- less paperwork Creates knowledge Networks Can be audited in one day

Results : Auditing EMAS easy in SMEs Some experience gained from the field... Revalidation takes more time than initial audit Auditors can learn and do it two or three times faster Small clusters of 4-5 are the ideal group for joint auditing EMAS certification is possible in small clusters within a day Size of declaration and its verification important time factor
