Golf Course Irrigation
2
Purpose Keep turf grass healthy Produces a good playing surface
water comprises 80 to 85 percent of the weight of a grass plant Produces a good playing surface Way to apply pesticides and other chemicals

Water Source Rainfall Lakes and Ponds On Site Wells
Municipal Water Systems Rain fall is the preferred source. This is because it is free, clean, and distributed uniformly. Unfortunately we cannot schedule when it will rain. Lakes and ponds are used to irrigate and are also used as design features in golf courses. Well depths to ground water can be as shallow as 20 to 50 feet or as deep as 1,500 to 2,500 feet (Beard, 2002). Muncipal water is easy to access however in time of a drought it can become restricted and this is also expensive.
6
Pump Station Draws Water From Source
Release water into system as needed Pipes are underground
7
Supply Lines Large Pipes at the pump station and become smaller towards the sprinkler Check Pressure Rating Materials of Pipe: PVC Galvanized iron Poly ethylene Pressure rating – estimated max pressure of water a pipe can handle before failing
8
Control Mechanisms Starts and stops the valves
Can be automatic or manual Can control one sprinkler or several
9
Sprinkler Heads Different Types: Most Common on Golf Course
Fixed spray, pop up, bubblers, rotary, and strip Most Common on Golf Course Rotary and pop up Most Turn 360 degrees
10
Subsurface Irrigation Drip
Irrigation hoses are located under the surface of the grass throughout the golf course Sensors implanted in the ground for more accurate watering sensors are implanted in the ground that let the groundskeepers know if there are any areas that need extra attention
11
When to Irrigate Most irrigate by the calendar
Best way to irrigate is by assessing frequently Temperature, humidity Soil moisture Wind conditions Cloud cover Predicted rainfall
