History of satellite positioning Originally for military purposes to replace terrestrial navigation NAVSTAR, later GPS, started in the 1970s – with a few satellites system Position data based on trilateration
5
GPS “global positioning system” Receiver reads signals sent from the satellite network. When enough signals received, the position is calculated. 3 signals will give an unprecise position, generally 4 or more satellite signals are needed for accurate positioning.
6
A-GPS “assisted -gps” In addition to GPS-data, local reference data such as a mobile phone station’s data is used to assist in positioning. Less visible satellites needed More precise positioning. Speeds up getting the first positioning data.
