3 Portland Community College Is the largest community college in Oregon. Serves more than 100,000 students last year. Offers more than 100 programs.

5 The Culinary Assistant Program is a unique program offered by Portland Community College since early 70’s. It is designed specifically for individuals with various special needs.

6 This program offers students with serious deficiency in reading/writing/mathematics an opportunity to participate in college education. Students are not required to take a placement test before enrolling in the program. The program combines 15% classroom instruction and 85% hands-on training to help students obtain entry-level food or custodial jobs. Students will receive a Portland Community College Certificate upon completion of three terms (9 months) of training as Culinary Assistant.

7 The program was awarded the Best program from the OAVSNP (Oregon Association for Vocational Special Needs Personnel). The instructor has won numerous awards including Faculty/Staff Excellence Award from both Portland Community College and Portland State University. He has been cited many times in Who’s Who in American Education as well as the Who’s Who in the World. Experienced trainers

8 WHEN AND WHERE THE STUDENTS ATTEND THE PROGRAM? Students can start the program in Fall, Winter or Spring Term. Training is available on all 4 major PCC campuses – Sylvania, Rock Creek, Cascade, and Southeast.

9 The class curriculum includes issues such as food safety, on-the-job safety, attendance, teamwork, social/people skills, following directions, accepting criticism, job readiness and interviewing techniques. Many important issues will also be addressed in the class, such as independence, accepting responsibility, making good choices and decisions, healthy life style and diet, interpersonal relationships and boundary setting, stress and anger management, professionalism, etc.

10 Students spend 5 hours every school-day training with the PCC Foodservice staff. The training will focus on hands-on learning with minimal take-home assignments.

15 Students who successfully complete the program should be able to: Fully understand and apply the learned specific job-related knowledge, such as food safety, on-the-job safety, teamwork, and following directions. Demonstrate job-success/soft skills, such as professionalism, proper social skills, positive attitudes, good work ethics, and appropriate workplace behaviors. Use the learned skills to improve employability and retain employment.

17 WHAT ARE THE PROGRAM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS ? Students must be 18 years of age or older. Students must have a documented disability. Students must have a genuine interest in working with food or custodial job. Students must have determination to learn and improve. Students must be able to work at least semi- independently throughout the day of work.

19 Learn and be familiar with 6 College Core Outcomes, the basic requirement for program certificate 1) Critical thinking and the 5 critical questions. 2) Self-reflection, own beliefs against others’ beliefs. 3) Communication, with self (self-control) and others. 4) Cultural awareness, social and workplace cultures. 5) Professional competence and professionalism. 6) Community and environmental responsibility.
