4 A Map of New Zealand and Oceania New Zealand lies to the east of Australia. It is made up of two large islands. It is about the same size as Philippines. Wellington is the capital city, which lies on the North Island. New Zealand has a mild sea climate with plenty of rain. It has a lot of natural beauties, such as deep blue seas, beautiful bays and beaches, green hills and mountains, dead volcanoes, hot springs, special plants and animals. The earliest people that settled in New Zealand were the Maori. Later came the Chinese, the Dutch and the English. Then the Maori signed an agreement with the settlers. Its population now is mainly made up of by the Maori and the Europeans.
