3. About UAB Established as an extension center of the University of Alabama in the mid-1930s. It is a Public, Coeducational and Doctoral University. UAB is the newest and largest in terms of faculty, staff, and budget of Alabama's major Universities.

4. UAB Medical School The School of Medicine at UAB is dedicated to the education of physicians and scientists in all of the disciplines of medicine and biomedical investigation for careers in practice, teaching and research. The University of Alabama System--composed of the University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa), the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville--was created in 1969. At the same time, the Medical College of Alabama, located in Birmingham, became known as the "University of Alabama School of Medicine."

5. UAB Sports UAB Athletics began in 1977, with the hiring of Gene Bartow, as Athletic Director.
