17 JAMS 8 th Grade Topics Science: Physical Science Newton’s Laws Force and Motion Properties of Matter Transformation and Conservation of Energy Chemical Interactions and Reactions Math: Algebra at JMS or Geometry at CHS Students who successfully complete 8 th gr. JAMS will receive: 1 credit of high school science and 1 credit of high school math (or 2 if in Geometry) As 8 th graders, JAMS students will take high school science and math classes.

18 Criteria for Student Success Strong work and study habits MSP scores for Reading, Writing, Math, and Science at level 3 or level 4. MAP scores for Reading and Math above the 85 th Percentile. Those who maintain semester grade of C or better in JAMS classes tend to perform well in high school level classes. ** Map testing is available at JMS if your child has not been tested.

19 Selection Process Lottery Pool 1: Students meeting criteria for success will be randomly selected until all spots are filled or names are exhausted, whichever comes first. MSP scores – Level 3 or 4 MAP scores – 85 th percentile and above Pool 2: Space permitting, students not in Pool 1 will be drawn to fill remaining spots with preference given to students who meet the following criteria: MSP scores – High Level 2 and above MAP scores – 75 th percentile and above Waiting List: If space is filled and applicants remain, those students will be placed on a waiting list based on selection criteria.

20 Timelines—Next Steps Pool 1 applications due Thursday, February 20 must be turned into JMS by 4PM. Pool 1 lottery occurs on March 3. Pool 2 lottery will occur within two weeks after the original lottery. Families will be notified within a week of the lottery. Applications submitted after the deadline will be drawn at a later date, if spots remain. Applications can be submitted at any time to be placed on the waiting list for that school year.
