Ss. Cyril and Methodius University

Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics December 16 th, 1946

INSTITUTE OF CHEMISTRY One of the oldest institutes, established in 1946 at the very foundation of the Faculty 1968 Institute of Chemistry moves to a new building Occupies more than 10 000 m 2 space, with amphitheatre, 4 lecture rooms, 20 laboratories, offices, and a Library with more than 10 000 books and 50 000 periodicals. Teaching staff: 50 professors and associates

ORGANIZATION The Institute of Chemistry comprises four divisions: Division of Inorganic Chemistry Division of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry Division of Analytical Chemistry Division of Physical Chemistry

ACTIVITIES Educational - undergraduate studies, leading to BSc and BEd - graduate studies, leading to MSc, MEd, PhD Research Applications Slike antiteatre

Undergraduate Program IC offers curricula leading to a degree in Chemistry. a four-year (8 semester) programs, with 30 credit hours per week Majoring in: - educational - applied (engineering) chemistry - analytical biochemistry - interdisciplinary studies for teachers in biology-chemistry The major in engineering chemistry is further divided into: - a major in applied analytical and structural chemistry and - a major in applied preparative chemistry. The first two-year courses for the educational and applied chemistry majors are common for all students. Depending on the major area, students are awarded with B. Ed. or B. Sc. diplomas upon completion of the program

GRADUATE PROGRAM Two-level program, leading to a M. Sc. or Ph. D. Degree in Chemistry. The Master's degree program is a two-year (four-semester) program, consisting of both compulsory and elective courses. A student should select no less than 60 credit hours per year. The list of courses should fit a logical scheme. Each individual is assigned a supervisor (mentor). A Master's thesis has to be written in the research field of interest An internal criterion exists as a precondition for a thesis defense: the individual should publish at least one paper closely related to his or her Master thesis research area.

SOME COURSES TOUGHT AT MSc CHEMISTRY programs (related to Forensic Chemistry) Trace analysis and sample preparation Chromatographic methods of analysis Non-destructive & micro-destructive spectroscopic methods of analysis Analysis of explosives & hazardous materials, drugs abuse Toxic materials of organic & inorganic origin Environmental chemistry
